The word NIF is an abbreviation for "Número de Identificação Fiscal" (Tax Identification Number), also commonly called a Taxpayer Number. In other words, it is a sequential number exclusively for processing tax and customs information. To obtain a NIF, both foreigners and nationals who do not live in Portugal (living in a third country) need a tax representative. This representative must necessarily be a legal resident or a Portuguese national living in Portugal. In short, the NIF is the document that contains all tax and financial information directly linked to the AT - Autoridade Fiscal e Aduaneira (Tax and Customs Authority).

This Tax Representative will be responsible for fulfilling the taxpayer's tax obligations (such as income tax returns, for example, if applicable) and paying fines if the represented party fails to file the necessary declarations.

For the purpose of assigning a Tax Identification Number (NIF), the tax authority's system does not recognize an address in Portugal, unless the applicant legally resides in the country. Therefore, the applicant must complete the form and submit proof of residence from their country of origin or the country where they live, excluding Portugal.
