In other words, it is a sequential number exclusively for processing tax and customs information. To obtain a NIF, both foreigners and nationals who do not live in Portugal (living in a third country) need a tax representative. This representative must necessarily be a legal resident or a Portuguese national living in Portugal. In short, the NIF is the document that contains all tax and financial information directly linked to the AT - Autoridade Fiscal e Aduaneira (Tax and Customs Authority).
